Introduction

The rapid evolution of computing systems—driven by edge devices, AI accelerators, and domain-specific architectures—has created unprecedented hardware heterogeneity. Modern platforms combine CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs, ASICs, and emerging technologies such as neuromorphic and photonic processors. This diversity challenges traditional Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools, demanding new paradigms for design automation.

Artificial intelligence offers transformative potential in this space, enabling automation of complex tasks, optimization of design flows, and adaptive systems. Techniques like reinforcement learning, neural architecture search, and generative modeling are reshaping how systems are designed, verified, and deployed. However, AI integration into heterogeneous design automation remains fragmented and underdeveloped.

Current EDA tools are optimized for homogeneous architectures and fail to address multi-domain, multi-technology, and multi-abstraction challenges. There is a pressing need for systematic research and education to bridge AI and EDA. Future methodologies must deliver cross-layer optimization from software to silicon, intelligent automation for design space exploration, and scalable architectures that adapt to evolving workloads and technologies. Additionally, collaborative ecosystems are essential to unify traditionally isolated domains.

Heterogeneous design automation will enable next-generation systems that are faster, more efficient, and more adaptable. By combining AI-driven intelligence with advanced design methodologies, this research aims to overcome complexity and unlock innovation across computing platforms.

The Electronic Systems group

This position is embedded in the Electronic Systems (ES) group within the Electrical Engineering department at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). Our group consists of six full professors, three associate professors, seven assistant professors, several postdocs, approximately 40 EngD and PhD candidates, and support staff. The ES group is world-renowned for its design automation and embedded systems research. Our research is organized in three sub-programs that cover the engineering, system and circuit perspectives: Model-driven engineering, smart electronic systems, and digital nano-electronics. ES has strong collaborations with industry, research institutes and other universities. Several of its staff members have a second affiliation besides their TU/e-ES affiliation. The group is a multi-cultural team, with staff members of eight different nationalities and students from all over the world.

Job Description

The ES group aims to provide a scientific basis for design trajectories of electronic systems, ranging from digital circuits to cyber-physical systems. Within this position you will contribute to our research on smart electronic systems. Next to your research activities you will develop and teach courses at both undergraduate and graduate level in English. You will also be involved in supervising Bachelor, Master, EngD, and PhD candidates. 

In this role, you will contribute to the ambition of the Beethoven program to educate top talent and strengthen research across the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Job Requirements

  • Motivated researcher with a PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or Embedded Systems research or a comparable domain.
  • Strong network (academic, industry); research interactions on the national and international level, supported by e.g. joint collaborations, projects, or publications.
  • Experience in management of professionals, aimed at developing people and creating synergy.
  • Excellent teaching skills, preferably demonstrated at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Experience with the process of acquiring external research funding from (inter-)national funding bodies or industry.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills demonstrating the potential of building your own research group.
  • Excellent proficiency (written and verbal) in English.

  • Salary in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. For a junior Assistant Professor this is (scale 11) min. € 4,728 max. € 6,433 gross per month (on a full-time basis).
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.

  • A Development Track with the prospect of becoming an Associate Professor. If you have a more senior profile, a tailor-made career proposal will be considered.
