Are you excited to push the boundaries of electronic-photonic integration? Join us to develop next-generation technologies for ultra-fast, energy-efficient sensors, imaging systems, and advanced communication devices.

Introduction

High-performance electronic and photonic technologies are rapidly converging, creating new opportunities for miniaturized sensors, imaging systems, and advanced communication devices. Integration of electronics and photonics is essential to achieve the energy efficiency, precision, and speed required for next-generation applications. While communications have traditionally driven this field, emerging applications in sensing, signal processing, metrology, lidar, and computing (quantum, neuromorphic, optical) are now shaping its future. Key technology trends include higher electrical modulation bandwidths, lower energy loss, robust circuits, increased integration density, and closer multi-technology integration.

Group

The Photonic Integration (PhI) group within the Electrical Engineering department at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is a European leader in photonic integrated circuits (PICs), with a strong track record in indium phosphide (InP) technology. Our research spans cleanroom process development, component design, and application-specific integrated circuits. The group plays a key role in European Chips Act projects and pilot lines, and is now leveraging synergies between III-V photonics and high-performance III-V electronics. Our work is supported by TU/e’s state-of-the-art Nanolab cleanroom facility, specializing in III-V processing, and benefits from strong collaborations with other Electrical Engineering research groups and the local high-tech ecosystem.

Job Description

As an Assistant Professor, you will:

  • Develop innovative integration technologies that can combine advanced electronics and photonics for high-performance circuits.
  • Conduct research in areas such as high-speed III-V component design, semiconductor epitaxial engineering, and fabrication of active components (e.g., diodes, HEMTs, HBTs).
  • Explore methods for co-design and intimate integration of electronic and photonic devices.
  • Build a new research line focused on the performance limits of chip-based circuits with applications in data centers, AI acceleration, 6G, radar, and sensor technologies.
  • Contribute to TU/e’s educational mission by teaching MSc courses and strengthening the semiconductor lab flow, enabling students to design and fabricate their own chips.
  • Supervise PhD, MSc, and BSc students and integrate challenge-based learning into teaching.
  • Actively pursue research funding through national and European programs (e.g., Dutch subsidy, Horizon Europe, European Research Councial, Chips Joint Undertaking) and industry collaborations.

In this role, you will contribute to the ambition of the Beethoven program to educate top talent and strengthen research across the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate:

  • Holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a closely related field.
  • Has expertise in one or more of the following:
    • High-speed III-V component design at the process level.
    • Semiconductor epitaxial engineering.
    • Fabrication of active components such as diodes and transistors (HEMT, HBT).
    • Co-design and integration of electronic and photonic devices.
  • Demonstrates strong research potential and ability to operate in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Shows affinity with teaching and will commit to obtaining the University Teaching Qualification.
  • Has motivation to secure research funding and build collaborations with industry and academia.
  • Possesses excellent communication and organizational skills and the ability to motivate researchers.

Conditions of Employment

A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you:

  • Salary in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. For a junior Assistant Professor this is (scale 11) min. € 4.728,- max. € 6.433,- gross per month (on a full-time basis).
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
  • A dedicated mentoring program to help you get to know the university and the Dutch (research) environment.
  • A Development Track with the prospect of becoming an Associate Professor. If you have a more senior profile, a tailor-made career proposal will be considered.
  • High-quality training programs for academic leadership and teaching.
  • An excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children's day care and sports facilities.
  • Partially paid parental leave and an allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
  • A Staff Immigration Team is available for international candidates, as are a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility) and partner career support.
