Finance and Control (F&C) is responsible for all financial and economic management of TU/e and affiliated institutions. This includes making and executing financial policy, advising on financial and economic issues, treasury, drawing up budgets and financial reports, invoicing third parties, administrating incoming invoices and (travel) declarations, and drafting outgoing invoices and (debit) collection.

At the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, we are looking for a Business Unit Controller. In this role, you will play a key part in maintaining financial administration, preparing reports, and advising middle management. Your focus will be on improving business performance, ensuring data integrity through controls and process improvements, and managing project risks.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Managing the finances of multiple research groups, including analysis, forecasting, and ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of reporting.
  • Acting as a financial professional who enjoys working on-site with a team of finance colleagues to further professionalize processes.
  • Contributing to the development of this new role at TU/e.
  • Serving as the content expert and first-line support for research groups, helping them interpret, plan, and optimize financial flows.
  • Supporting the Business Controller in translating faculty policy into practice within your research groups, both in HR and financial management.
  • Collaborating closely with Project Administrators and Project Controllers, who provide specific expertise on research projects.
  • Acting as the primary finance contact for research groups within the faculty.

You will work directly within one of our faculties, close to the research field. 

The team

You will join the Mathematics and Computer Science team, consisting of one Business Controller, two Unit Controllers (including this vacancy), three Project Controllers, and one Project Administrator. Together, the team manages the administration of 11 clusters with approximately 220 research projects. The Business Unit Controller role is part of the Project Control department, which is embedded within the larger Finance & Control division. In total, F&C has 140 colleagues working on the university’s full financial management.

Job requirements

Your profile:

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in project or financial control.
  • A constructive, critical, proactive, and collaborative mindset focused on delivering quality.
  • Strong accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to advise management effectively.
  • Strong networking skills.
  • Professional proficiency in both Dutch and English, spoken and written.
  • Affinity with higher education and research organizations is a plus.
  • Affinity with projects is a plus.
  • A finance professional who enjoys collaborating with both finance colleagues and non-financial staff. You not only prepare reports but also support researchers in interpreting them, providing both solicited and unsolicited advice.

  • A competitive salary in scale 10 of the Dutch Universities’ Collective Labor Agreement, ranging from €3,546 to €5,538 gross per month (based on a 38-hour week). Placement depends on your background and experience.
