As Lab Support in the education labs of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry you are the pivot in the preparation, safety, and organization of lab courses. You are directly involved in the lab education of our students and also in outreach activities that inspire prospective students.

Job Description

Are you an organizationally strong laboratory employee with a heart for education? Become laboratory support assistant of the education lab at the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at TU/e! In this position you take care of the daily operations in the lab, which is fully equipped for bachelor and master education. You will work in the ESA Team (Education and Student Affairs). This team is responsible for the organization of all educational processes within the faculty.

As laboratory support, you are the “spider in the web” in the preparation and support of teaching practica. You will do this together with a fellow teaching assistant and two lecturers. This practicum team takes care of practical components of various courses, including the “introduction practicum”. These are the first lab assignments students start working on immediately after their introduction to TU/e. Also, in the further bachelor program you take care of experiments ranging from material science to biotechnology for a student group varying between 20 and 180 students. You guarantee a safe and orderly learning environment, manage equipment and materials, and facilitate teachers and students so that they can get to work in the best way possible. You fulfill the role of practical expert during laboratory teaching. You actively contribute to outreach activities and share your enthusiasm for chemical engineering with high school students.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • You manage the teaching laboratory: ensuring cleanliness, order, material supplies and equipment that works;
  • You give safety and lab instructions to students and you monitor compliance;
  • You actively supervise during practicals together with a lecturer and are a point of contact for practical questions from students;
  • You support outreach activities for high school students, such as school visits, experience days, practical demonstrations in the lab;
  • You maintain and test standard and analytical equipment (such as pH meters, balances, GC-MS, GC-FID, HPLC, IR);
  • You prepare teaching practicals: ordering chemicals, preparing solutions, managing consumables, disposing of waste;
  • You work closely with faculty in implementing and improving teaching activities in the laboratory;
  • You contribute to the development of new teaching setups or demonstration experiments.

Job Requirements

  • Completed Dutch MBO or HBO education (or similar level) in chemistry, laboratory technology or similar field;
  • Affinity for teaching and working with students;
  • Experience with or willingness to learn to work with analytical techniques such as GC, HPLC, IR, NMR; You operate the equipment and are - together with a colleague - responsible for its maintenance.
  • Eye for safety and order in a learning environment; You get satisfaction from implementing and carrying out improvement projects.
  • You are communicative, careful and practical;
  • Good command of the English language, both oral and written;
  • You work independently, structured, proactive and are service oriented towards students and teachers.
  • Attendance with the ESA team during teaching hours and periods according to the academic calendar and teaching schedule.
