Departments, Department of Mechanical Engineering

Eindhoven University of Technology is an internationally top-ranking university in the Netherlands that combines scientific curiosity with a hands-on attitude. Our spirit of collaboration translates into an open culture and a top-five position in collaborating with advanced industries. Fundamental knowledge enables us to design solutions for the highly complex problems of today and tomorrow.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering department conducts world-class research aligned with the technological interests of the high-tech industry in the Netherlands, with a focus on the Brainport region. Our goal is to produce engineers who are both scientifically educated and application-driven by providing a balanced education and research program that combines fundamental and application aspects. We equip our graduates with practical and theoretical expertise, preparing them optimally for future challenges.

Introduction

We invite applications for two fully funded PhD positions in the field of experiments and diagnostics of low-temperature electrolysis of iron oxide for iron electrodeposition. These positions are part of the newly funded project EcoIron of Prof. Y. Tang by a European Research Council (ERC) starting grant.

Job Description

Low-temperature electrolysis (/electrodeposition) converting iron oxide/ore into metallic iron has received increasing attention as it offers a truly zero-emission ironmaking for applications of green steel production and iron-based energy storage. One problem, fundamental understanding of metal electrodeposition is largely lacking. Knowledge gaps remain on the exact mechanisms of conversion from solid oxides to metallic iron, as well as the exact physics and operation parameters controlling the quality and morphology of iron deposits. These two PhD projects aim to leverage our state-of-the-art scientific understanding via filling these knowledge gaps. The research will involve well-designed electrochemical experiments with electrochemistry measurements (e.g. CA, CV, EIS) and material characterization (e.g., SEM, EDX, XRD, ICP-OES), as well as using operando diagnostics (e.g. neutron imaging, X-ray tomography/radiography).

Job Requirements

We are looking for motivated and curious PhD candidates with the following qualifications:

  • A master’s degree (or an equivalent university degree) in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related discipline.
  • Solid background in electrochemical experimentation and/or diagnostics.
  • Beneficial, but not a must-have: previous experience in the topic of metal electrodeposition/electrowinning.
  • A research-oriented attitude.
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and subject.
  • Motivated to develop your teaching skills and coach students.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English (C1 level).

Conditions of Employment

A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you:

  • A dynamic and supportive research environment in a leading energy-technology research group
  • Full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. You will spend a minimum of 10% of your four-year employment on teaching tasks, with a maximum of 15% per year of your employment.
  • Salary and benefits (such as a pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P (min. € 3,059 max. € 3,881).
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
  • High-quality training programs and other support to grow into a self-aware, autonomous scientific researcher. At TU/e we challenge you to take charge of your own learning process
