About the organization 
Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is an internationally oriented research university, specializing in engineering, science & technology and is known for its large scientific impact and its role in developing technological innovations. TU/e is a university at the center of society and sets its focus on complex social challenges by concentrating its education and research on three Strategic Areas: Energy, Health, and Smart Mobility. 

An ambitious university requires dedicated support to our scientists within the fields of Research Data Management (RDM) and Open Science. This support is provided by the Library and Information Services (LIS), specifically through its product area Research. Within this area, multiple teams closely collaborate with each other and with researchers to support them in research data management, IT solutions, and computational needs.

The position 
You will have a dual role – data steward (within Data steward team) and a data manager (within Research Data Literacy and Curation team). Data steward team vision is to help researchers with new challenges in a collaborative way, while being an advocate of open & responsible scientific practices that transcend TU/e. Research Data Literacy and Curation (RDLC) team is developing data solutions for long-term preservation of research data, such as archive and internal repository. As a Data Manager, you will support researchers across TU/e from various scientific departments. 

We are looking for a Data Steward/Data Manager with good understanding of research data management, research data lifecycle, research data infrastructure, and privacy and ethics in research. You will serve as first-line support for researchers in addressing these questions. 

Your tasks and responsibilities are best described as follows: 

Support and advise our Researchers on RDM-related issues, such as:  

• Data Management Plans (DMP); 
• Data management paragraphs for grant proposals; 
• Collection, storage, publication and archival of research data; 
• FAIR principles in research data, focusing on interoperability; 

Support and advise Researchers on privacy-related issues, such as: 

• Informed consent and privacy notices; 
• Evaluating privacy roles within research collaborations and consortia and identifying the needed agreements and documents; 
• Assessing privacy and legal risks (including copyright and licensing) during the entire research lifecycle; 
• Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIA) in collaboration with the Privacy team; 
• Develop and provide trainings on RDM and privacy/GDPR compliance. 

Support for Reseach Archival Package Solution (RAPS):  

• Evaluating requests to archive or retrieve the data package, according to established administrative procedures. 
• Assisting RAPS users throughout archiving process. 
• Checking the completeness and quality of the data package. 
• Actively contributing to optimizing the archiving process, guidelines and RAPS. 
• This support for RAPS relate to TU/e in general and not only for your specific scientific department. 

Support and collaborate with multiple teams within LIS and your scientific department, such as:  

• Being part of the departmental support Hub-, data steward-, RDLC- team; 
• Achieving team objectives by working together with others; 
• Establish a functional and appropriate services supply chain for researchers in coordination with colleagues of the LIS- product area Research. 

Given the dual nature of this position, we provide an example of what a typical week might look like (please note, this is only indicative). 

• Monday (on TU/e campus): You will be based at the scientific department (Built Environment). Activities include bi-weekly Hub meetings (the Hub is a departmental support unit for researchers) and a monthly meeting with the Research Development and Support Office to review current developments, your departmental activities, and any collaborative assignments. In the afternoon, you may visit a researcher seeking advice on data sharing within their consortium and address general research data management questions.
• Tuesday (on TU/e campus): You will work with the RDLC team, contributing to broad research data lifecycle topics, including RAPS and the data curation process.
• Thursday (on TU/e campus): You will collaborate with the Data Stewards team. While you have dedicated time for your own tasks, you will also participate in team meetings to discuss common topics and share knowledge and ideas.
• Wednesday and Friday: You have the option to work remotely. 

Throughout the week, you will receive requests related to your dual role as Data Steward and Data Manager. These will be addressed based on priority, and you will have flexibility in organizing your work. 

Job Requirements

We are looking for a new colleague with the following qualifications and characteristics: 

• An academic level of work and thinking, preferably a completed Master or PhD in the technical or medical sciences, and an affinity with research practice; 
• Proactive and result-oriented attitude. You gain energy from pioneering and collaborating within a relatively new field of work in support of scientific research; 
• You have the ability to easily assimilate knowledge, and are not afraid to learn on the job; 
• You are skilled in transferring and sharing knowledge to staff, students, junior researchers, and senior researchers; 
• Ability to connect and translate various requirements (i.e. legal, policy and technical) into solutions and best practices, with regards to RDM and data stewardship; 
• Customer-oriented and supportive way of working, you gain energy from supporting and solving issues for others within the organization; 
• Networking skills and you feel comfortable with connecting people and building networks; 
• Excellent communication and negotiating skills, and you are able to be authoritative when the situation requires it; 
• You have excellent English language skills, both verbally and in writing. Proficiency in the Dutch language is not a requirement, but it is an advantage. 
• You are able to work on-site at the TU/e campus at least three days per week; therefore, residing within reasonable commuting distance. Note, occasional exceptions will be fine. 

Preferably you have: 

• Experience in handling privacy-sensitive data and knowledge of GDPR, and/or willingness to develop yourself further in this field. 
• Experience in or a demonstrable affinity with RDM and data stewardship within higher education or a research institution. 
• Knowledge which will contribute to applying FAIR principles to research data.

• A monthly salary of minimum €3.546,- to maximum €6.433,- for full-time employment, depending on your knowledge and experience (scale 10/11 collective labour agreement for Dutch Universities).
