Introduction

Enjoy working with advanced vacuum, magnetic thin-film systems? Want to help develop new methods for next-generation magnet-based electronics? Join us as Research Laboratory Technician and grow your skills in a dynamic, high-tech academic environment.

The research group Physics of Nanostructures (FNA) works on cutting-edge research with magnetic thin-film systems that are structured on the nanometer scale. We study the basic properties of these materials for future applications in micro-electronics, sensing, photonics, and healthcare.

Our group specializes in a new type of electronics that uses magnetic effects, called spintronics. For this work, we operate a world-class facility with several connected ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) systems used to deposit and analyze extremely thin films. We also use different setups for magnetic, optical, and electrical measurements, some of which involve cryogenic (very low-temperature) techniques.

Training students and young researchers in this high-tech environment is one of our main priorities.

Job Description

The research laboratory technician works in a dynamic environment, manages their own schedule, and is responsible for their own workspace in a varied and hands-on role. The technician is a key contact person for students, young researchers, and scientific staff, helping them solve technical problems and facilitate new experiments.

Together with an experienced technician, they take care of the maintenance and optimal performance of the experimental setups within the research group. The ideal candidate is eager to learn and motivated to gain sufficient knowledge of both, mechanical, UHV and cryogenic techniques to work independently with complex equipment. An affinity to learn software for automation and system control (e.g., Python, LabView) would be highly valued.

With growing expertise, the technician will also support other research groups within the faculty.

Tasks

As a Research Laboratory Technician, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Ensuring the continuity and reliability of the high-quality laboratory infrastructure
  • Performing maintenance on the research setups in the labs
  • Identifying and solving technical problems
  • Designing, coordinating, and supporting the production of new components and equipment, in close collaboration with the scientists
  • Supporting, training, and assisting students and researchers in their laboratory work
  • Maintaining contacts with external companies regarding orders and maintenance
  • Coordinating your work with other research groups and support services within the university

Job Requirements

We are looking for a candidate who meets the following criteria:

  • You have completed an MBO level 3 or 4 education, for example in mechatronics or a similar field, or you have gained an equivalent level through experience
  • Preferably you have knowledge of machining techniques, cryogenic technology, and ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) systems, or you are willing to follow training to learn these
  • You are familiar with the materials used and with proper cleaning procedures
  • You understand how different pumps and pressure gauges work
  • You have an idea of what is required for (UHV) welding work
  • You have a reasonable command of the English language, with spoken communication being the most important
  • You are interested in learning to develop or manage laboratory automation software
  • Experience in a similar working environment is an advantage
